The International English Language Testing System

Posted on November 15, 2016

IELTS is an English language test that measures the proficiency of candidates who want to study or work in settings where English is the main language of communication. Testing is based on a 9 level scale that accurately identifies candidate proficiency - a beginner would be considered level 1, while an expert would be considered level 9. IELTS is made available in two distinct formats (Academic and General), and serves to gauge four primary skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. As one of the most popular English language proficiency tests in the world, IELTS is the ideal platform for those who would like to study, work, or immigrate to a country like Canada.

Trusted by some 350 Canadian organizations, IELTS is the preferred language test across Canada. For newcomers, the test is recognized by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (and Immigration Quebec). It confirms proof of English proficiency for skilled immigrants, Quebec skilled workers, and Provincial Nominee candidates. The Academic Test is designed for those who wish to study in an undergraduate or postgraduate capacity, or join a professional organization that requires English is a requisite. The General Test is designed for those who wish to apply for Express Entry into Canada, or any of the other immigration streams that are available through the CIC agency.

The IELTS Academic Test

The Academic test is designed for those who are applying for higher education or for registration in a professional organization. Test results reflect whether a candidate is ready to study or train.

The IELTS General Test

The General Training test is for those going to English speaking nations for secondary education, working experience, or training. This test is one of the requirements for immigrating to Canada.

IELTS tests are less than three hours in length. The “listening” and “speaking” segments are the same for both Academic and General. However, the subject matter for the “reading” and “writing” segments do differ. The listening, reading and writing segments are completed on one day, and without any breaks. The speaking segment can be completed on its own, before or after the other segments. Candidates will find over 1000 test locations, in some 140 countries. Registration can be completed online or by conventional means. A valid identity document is required to register and as proof of identity when the test is being taken. Timetables will depend on each test centre.

Ensuring credibility, quality and fairness

IELTS is recognized worldwide for reliability and fairness. The testing process is fair to everyone, regardless of nationality, culture, gender, or special needs. Testing provides accurate assessment of language skills and communication abilities. As such, academic and non-academic skills can be properly assessed. All of the standard variations of native English are recognized, including North American and United Kingdom. Test questions are routinely examined and reexamined to ensure that they are fair. Finally, IELTS tests are subject to very high quality controls, security protocols, and integrity practices. There is ongoing monitoring of each test centre and in-house examiners.
